Blog #14, "Mud Bowl", "Best Laid Plans," Epilogue and Afterward of "Friday Night Lights"

Just something I found on—what else—YouTube. Almost a minute of the Texas semi-final game between Permian and Carter.

It was all true. The sordid, sad story of Derric Evans and Gary Edwards sentenced to long prison terms for robbery while waiting to go play Division One football. Peter Berg's film ends with a note about Don and Charlie Billingsley still having a relationship, when in real life, it ends not long after the football. "Their living together had always been a rough road, and without the common bond of football it seemed harder than ever for them to stay together." This sounds more like the fictional relationship between Tim and Walt Riggins. No post-high school football for Mike Winchell or Jerrod McDougal or Brian Chavez (not counting house tackle football at Harvard). In the afterward to the first edition of the book, Bissinger writes, "In November 1990, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that Permian football boosters for at least a decade had been making secretive cash payments to the Permian head coach ranging from $10,000 to $20,000 yearly." That same year, the year after it won the Texas state championship, "Permian was banned from participating in the playoffs...for conducting supervised workouts before the official start of the season. It was Jerry Taylor, head coach of crosstown rival Odessa High, who turned Permian in for the infraction."

And finally, Boobie Miles. In the movie, he shares the sidelines with the team as it loses to Carter. In real life he listens to the game from Odessa, "discarded," a term several of you have used to describe him, from the team completely. Peter Berg, in making the film, said, "I didn't want to end the story with him alone. I felt that would be too dark." But true.

1. So what is your reaction to the end of the book, including the afterward that updates the story of the players through 1999-2000? Is this a sad ending? A bitter ending? What kind of ending is this for you? Go ahead and quote a couple times.

2. Speaking of endings. Back in Dillon, in the episode "Mud Bowl," The Panthers overcome all odds by beating the Brant Vikings 10-2. What a glorious moment—they're on their way to State! Or is it a glorious moment? This is either the most audacious, courageous move the filmmakers made, or the stupidest (which reminds us, as Billy Riggins says, that Tim has a PhD. in stupid), clumsiest moment of the entire series up to this point. So what do you think—and why? And whether you like the decision or not, why might the show have done this? To what possible purpose?

3. Finally: what moment or scene stayed with you from today's viewings, and why?

One more episode. If you questions about the writing topic, ask me tomorrow.

  1. I don’t think the ending of the book is necessarily clear cut happy or sad. Their loss in the semi finals was very upsetting and even as I read it I found myself hoping by some way they actually could win even though I knew this was a ridiculous hope. Also the way the players are recycled from year to year leaves me unsettled. “They and all the other seniors were placed in a neat little pile at the bottom, and suddenly there was no sign of them at all on the board, just black, empty spaces that would soon be filled by other magnets at quarterback and tailback and middle linebacker and all the other positions. The season had ended, but another one had begun. People everywhere, young and old, were already dreaming of heroes” (337). Coming up on my own senior year, it scares me to think that my high school career is coming to an end. McDougal says, “’These sophomores think it’s a long road… but it ain’t’. And suddenly he wasn’t a high school football player at all, but a high school kid with absolutely no idea of what he was going to do with his life” (336). I think, however, there is some sort of happy image one can pull from the ending of this book. Although the stories of the players after high school are quite dismal, the change in Odessa is definitely a positive one. “There is no doubt that the fixation on Permian football made it great. There is also no doubt the same fixation caused the educational system to suffer in the shadows. The shift in priorities was desperately needed. But as a consequence of that shift, the glory of Permian football has dropped to an all-time low” (364). Too many the lesser emphasis on football may seem distressing, but I think this switch was needed so less people end up like McDougal, Boobie, Winchell or any other football played.

I’m happy the show made the Panthers win the semi-finals game. I think the show has so much distress and negative story lines that one part of the story had to succeed. This show as it has progressed has become less and less about football and more about the lives of the people involved in football. Everything seems to be going wrong in these characters live as of now, and some positive aspect was needed so that the show was a little less dark. However, I think the filmmakers remind us every second of that semi-finals game that even when the Dillon Panther’s are winning the world is not perfect, in fact it is quite the opposite. Tyra has a man molest her. Even when the majority of Dillon feels like they are walking on air, they cannot escape the evils of their town.

I think the scene that has stayed with me is the scene when Lyla comes over to Jason’s house. She finally speaks her mind and breaks free from the girlfriend who no matter what will be by Jason’s side. I don’t like Lyla all the much, but during this scene I find myself liking Lyla more. She finally stands up for herself. I know Jason has a lot on his plate but he doesn’t even take a moment to try and sympathize with Lyla about her parents. He is wallowing in his own self-pity. Lyla is absolutely right that he should find a new quad-rugby team or find a way to make the lawsuit go away. Finally somebody is able to stand up to Jason Street and tell him what he needs to hear, just because he is in his a wheel chair doesn’t mean he can’t fight for what he believes in.

  2. I thought it was a very sad and heart-breaking end for the book and most of the football players in it. The book seemed to show that the cycle of Permian high school football in Odessa, Texas is unbreakable and forever on going. The author did mention that there had been some substantial improvements like number of students taking the SAT doubled, the girl’s athletics program got more funding, and the school even built a softball and soccer complex: “A softball and soccer complex in Odessa? Miracles do happen.” The problem is that after that little hopeful piece of news he goes on to say that, “football may have a slightly different place in the psyche of Odessa than it had a decade ago, but it still holds an iron grip.” I think it’s depressing that this vicious cycle of these high school boys passion for football and their want to be someone are being used by the school and the town to rouse the morale of the economically struggling town. Their bodies are being sacrificed because of their dedication to their town and their sport. They are constantly pushed farther and harder than they probably should for being 18 year olds from a rural town in Texas who won’t even make pro teams after all they’ve been through, as shown in the afterword. Not one ends up playing for a pro team and more importantly, I think, most of them end up back in Texas working low paid jobs. Their ‘way out’ turns out to not be football; their football careers didn’t get them anywhere. The only one who made it was Brian Chavez, his way out was by his academic achievements. The only thing that town focuses on though, as always, is their football team: “But one anchor was still there, as strong and solid as ever. It didn’t really matter who was playing, or who was coaching. It would always go on, just as Jerrod Mc Dougal had realized, because it was a way of life.” It’s such a sad note to end the book on, but that’s the reality of Odessa, Texas.
I personally loved that the Panthers overcame all odds and are going to state, and that they did this on a field they built themselves without all the fancy and sponsor money driven home stadium. The Dillon Panthers just played the game they loved in a simple field with the people who love them the most cheering them on. That game cause uplifting joy for the team that you could see in all the little personal moments after the game was won. And I think that’s exactly what the producers of the show want you to feel like. That even after all these kids personal struggles good, miraculous things can still happen. But I have a major issue with that message the producers decided to choose: it wasn’t very realistic and just supported the love of the whole football culture. At the same time I thought it was a good decision to create the juxtaposition between the amazing win of the football game with Tyra getting assaulted. I think the Tyra element helped that whole night become a more realistic view of Dillon and that their lives are full of good and bad. So, overall I think the producers did an okay job by making the game too predictable and uplifting and then balancing it with Tyra’s struggle.

  3. The moment that stayed with me was Tyra talking to Landry at ‘The Roast’ about how she deserves better than Tim yet she’ll probably go back to him anyways. It made me think more about the sexism of the town and how girls like Tyra and Lyla seem to always have to settle. They aren’t raised believing they’re smart and can have careers of their own if they try hard enough. They seem to not have much confidence in their abilities and what they deserve in terms of being with guys who treat them right. Tyra would be the first one to go to college in her family and yet because of Dillon’s culture and societal traditions Tyra’s mom wants her to go get a pedicure instead of studying. Tyra also will probably end up getting back together with Tim Riggins because I don’t think she feels like she deserves better and looking her her mom’s and sister’s choices in men, Tim looks like a slightly better option. I think it’s just kind of sad how the town raises the girls to make them unconfident and make them underestimate themselves. I know the show is about football and the guys but I think it’s also important to look at the girls in the show and how they are influenced by Dillon’s culture of underlying sexism in their society.

  4. I don’t think it was an entirely sad ending. He talks about how the town started to lose interest with the team when they started losing, and I had mixed feelings about that. On one hand, it’s very sad because that is pretty much all the town had. But on the other hand, it isn’t such a bad thing because now the town can focus on more important things, like education. “Football may have a slightly different place in the psyche of Odessa than it had a decade ago, but it still holds an iron grip.” (366) People in Odessa still had football look forward to, but their dedication wasn’t as extreme. I think them winning the state championship the following year provided some happiness. “But one anchor was still there, as strong and solid as ever.” (354) In the years after the 1988 season, football still held the town in check with the bad economy, and the made the ending not so sad. The player’s stories weren’t happy, but weren’t terrible.

I think having them win was the right decision. It isn’t unrealistic, and there needed to be some happiness with the town. Tyra got sexually assaulted, the Garrity family fell apart, the Taylor family might fall apart, Lyla and Jason split up, and nothing great was happening. The victory also builds suspense with the whole situation of Taylor coaching at TMU.

The moment that stuck with me is at the roast when they showed Matt’s facial expressions towards Eric. He looked full of hatred and looked as if Eric was Benedict Arnold. Maybe it was because it would split up him and Julie, but I think it was because of something else. I think Matt views Eric as a father figure and sees the Taylors as his second family. They were there for him when he screamed at his dad in the parking lot after the game, and Eric speaks very highly of him. Eric believed in him at quarterback and helped become the player he is, and now he was leaving him.

  5. I would say that the ending isn’t sad or happy. There are definitely both sad and happy moments in the end, but I don’t think that the ending can be summed up as either one. All of the players miss playing football. It was such a big part of their lives that it is hard for them to no longer be a part of it. Jerrod McDougal says that they are now part of the “has-been club.” (346) They aren’t the current heroes of the town anymore. They no longer play under the heat of the Friday night lights. All of the players seem to be moving on in their lives, but the next season of football is starting up again. The players will always think of Permian football as a part of themselves, but Permian football has moved on. “It always goes on, it will never stop.” (345) The never ending cycle of football seasons continues without them. I guess I actually find it a sad and nostalgic ending.

I didn’t notice the scene being clumsy or stupid. I was caught up in the moment. I was glad that the panthers won and are going on to state. For me the ending works. I think that they decided to have the panthers win, because so far everything in the show has been leading up to state. It would be such a let down if they didn’t make it to the finals. I think that they decided to do it this way, because they don’t want the fans who have become so attached to the players and coaches to be disappointed in the first season.

The moment that stayed with me was when Tyra got attacked by that guy. That was so scary and I totally didn’t see it coming. I thought that the guy was just being nice, and then out of the blue he hit her. Having the scenes from the attempted rape mixed with the scenes from the dramatic football game made it really emotional and intense.

  6. I think that the afterward ends, not on a sad note, but on a truthful note. For these players entire lives they have been built up to believe that if you are a Permian Panther then you are a god, at the top of the food chain. What many of these seniors did not know was how replaceable and ordinary they really were. Sure they were loved in the fishbowl of their community but outside of it they were nothing special. Everyone realizes the large magnitude that their ego had swelled up to and have to adjust when they find out that recruiters aren’t really that interested in them. Boobie, while permanently injured, finally learns his lesson: “‘I had fame and glory and all that and the Lord took it away. I kind of had the big head, and he took it away from me.’” (350). It’s not like the majority of the kids don’t end up going to college but the ones who do feel a certain emptiness. Brian Chavez stops playing because of the low skill level and lack of attention one would receive from being on the Harvard team: “the program was on a par with the junior high one in Odessa. he also found it hard to adjust to the ideas of playing games in front of a handful of people when he had played in front of twenty-five thousand at Texas Stadium.” (344). Others, who at one time had seemed unbreakable, start to feel the effect of ignored injuries that had piled up over the years: “Don made the team at East Central. But in the middle of the 1989 season he had arthroscopic surgery on his knee. Ever since he had injured it while playing for Permian his senior year, it hadn’t been the same.” (347). One thing that all the players have in common is the recognition that Permian football is one of a kind. They miss “the magic of those Friday nights.” (350) and return to watch Permian play, only feeling that camaraderie by living vicariously through the players.

I think that it is a very interesting mix. With one story line we have the perfect ending where we don’t normally see it. Permian goes against a favored team without a field and in the pouring rain. However, they still win and we get the feel-good hook that Taylor had been craving: they play with the focus on the game, just like when they were little kids. On the other hand we have Tyra’s story line. While there are many issues in Dillon, we are still led to believe that Dillon is a pretty harmless small Texas town. Tyra’s assault completely changes how I feel about the town. It suddenly doesn’t seem that small and naive anymore.

The scene that stayed with me the most was when Tyra was attacked. We had never seen brutality like that so far in the season. There was violence in the home and some from the football team in the case of bullying but there was never any from strangers in the form of sexual abuse. Dillon does not seem like a scary town but after that scene it was clear that it was not as safe as most people made it out to be. It is not the sweet little town where people keep their doors unlocked and everybody knows each other.

  7. I think the ending is definitely sad. One reason for this bitter end is that Permian lost in a heartbreaking fashion in the semifinals. They were so close but they ultimately didn't win. Another reason, and a more important one in my opinion that the ending of the book is sad is that the vast majority of football players do not have any idea of what to do after the season is over. For example, after the season-ending loss "suddenly [Jerrod] wasn't high school football player at all, but a high school kid with absolutely no idea of what he was going to do with his life" (336). The Permian football program essentially uses its players for their talent until they graduate and then leaves them on their own, often without a good education because the players were so focussed on football. Jerrod says that "[He wishes] now [he] had tried harder in [his] studies" (345). Most of the team is much more focussed on winning the next game than doing well in school and that ultimately harms them in life. I think that makes the book end sadly because many players have troubled futures ahead.

I honestly think the filmakers messed up. I don't think that the two scenes of Tyra's assault and the Panthers victory fit together. I guess the filmmakers did it because they occur at the same time, however, I do not think it is a great courageous move. I feel that going to state was a glorious moment and a feel good moment, despite the cuts to the other scene. Therefore, I feel the show should have left it unmarred by such a sad, depressing, unhappy scene.

The moment that struck me the most from today's viewing was the scene at the roast where Landry gives his speech to Tyra. He finally, rather subtly professes his love to her, only to be interrupted by Riggins. I think this moment stuck out to me because Tyra seems to hear what he says and has a look of understanding when Landry walks out of the room. I think it was the first time someone said that he thinks she is smart and wants to listen to her interests, which caught her attention. And I think it may foreshadow a relationship between the two of them.

  8. I found the ending of the book extremely depressing, as it gave off a strong sense of hopelessness. But I feel like in this book, hopelessness is a major theme, and it is fitting for it to end in the same way. The players dreams in life that have been drilled into them ever since they were young are shattered, and they do not know what to do with themselves. Football is no longer a part of their lives as players, and for many it never will be again. "And suddenly he wasn't a high school football player at all, but a high school kid with absolutely no idea of what he was going to do with his life," (pg. 336). While the ending is depressing, I feel like it is more than just the loss of a football game. I think the loss teaches these boys about failure, and how to cope with it. That sometimes you will lose, and there is more to life than a game of football. "He was upset and melancholy, but life, instead of ending at this moment, was just beginning for him," (pg. 334). This is a lesson that is not taught in Odessa, as everyone is so caught up in winning. In a way, this loss is a harsh way to teach high school football players about life.

I think the show did the right thing in having Dillon go to State. But I feel it would not have been the right decision if the scene with Tyra getting raped was not included. The contrast at the episode switches from Tyra to the football game is powerful, and it gives a much bigger message. That message about life and life's struggles outside of football, very much like the book, and how football is not the most important thing. The filmmakers have Tyra being assaulted and the Panthers winning the semifinal at the same time to show that problems are not solved by winning football games. Everyone in Dillon seems to think that it will, and while Tyra's rape is not really known about, it is a serious slap in the face, a wake up call that football is not everything and does not solve problems. I think the show has been hiding this message throughout the whole series, and now in the final episodes the filmmakers really want to drive the point home.

The scene that stayed with me from today's episodes was the scene when Jason goes to Lyla's home to apologize. This scene stayed with me not only because it is the end of Lyla and Jason together, a major couple in the series, but because I couldn't help but notice how the scene was almost exactly identical to the scene with Buddy and Mrs. Garrity. The whole situation with Jason and Lyla is identical to that of her parents. When Jason goes to Lyla's house, Lyla says, "don't come back here." That is exactly what Pam says to Buddy, and she shuts the door on him in the same fashion as well. Both Buddy and Jason have not been faithful. While the two are almost identical, one difference is how Jason deals with it as oppose to Buddy. Buddy desperately wants his wife to forgive him and his family back, while Jason seems to be at peace with the fact that the relationship is over. When Lyla says that they finally know the way they feel about each other, Jason smiles, like he has finally gotten something off of his chest. The end of the relationship was necessary for the two of them to grow and live as human beings, but it is still a very harsh ending to their relationship.

  9. I personally find the ending fairly bittersweet, predominantly due to the fact that the majority of the players could not relinquish their fixation upon Permian football. This is displayed most prominently in Jerrod McDougal, whom of Bissinger wrote, “A month later he stood on the sidelines as Permian played the Rebels in Midland, and he sardonically referred to himself and the other former teammates who showed up as part of the ‘has-been club.’ […] Tears came to his eyes when the Permian band played the old psych-up song, ‘Hawaii 5-0’” (346). I find it incredibly odd that although Jerrod is consumed by feelings of abject while watching the game, he is still inexplicably drawn towards it. However, Brian’s continued attraction towards Permian football proved to be the most confusing from my personal standpoint. Although Brian possesses an unyielding loyalty to the team, it is insinuated that these feelings are not reciprocated back towards Brian. Gaines’ lack of commitment towards Brian following his departure from the team is apparent, exemplified by his failure to send the proper game tape to a Harvard football coach, which not only potentially marred Brian’s chance at admission, but left Brian “[…] deeply hurt, considering the sacrifices that he made to play for Permian, like the time in the playoffs junior year when he had played an entire game with a broken ankle” (343). However, in striking similarity to a sizable portion of the seniors he played with on the 1988 Permian football team, a return to Panther football instilled feelings of longing, remorse and nostalgia in his psyche. “During the annual football banquet to commemorate the 1988 season, a video of highlights of the season had been shown. […] When one of Brian’s roommates at Harvard played it one day, chills shot down Brian’s spine and he could almost feel tears welling in his eyes. It all came roaring back, the wins and losses, the glories and pains shared with his teammates” (344). I personally find it strange, even sad, how players are perpetually drawn back to a town and to a program that although forged lasting friendships and offered the players a sense of camaraderie, also instilled remorse in their lives and barred many from achieving even a minute portion of their potential beyond football.

I don’t believe that the Panther’s semi-final victory was entirely ridiculous, not taking the fact into account that television shows tend to veer towards this general path more often than not. Their victory serves to show that although their community is seemingly imploding due to a multitude of troubling incidents, football’s intangibility within the community allows for its unhindered continuation, which is depicted to some extent in the troubling juxtaposition of the semi-final game and a scene of an anonymous individual’s attempt to rape Tyra.

The scene that left the most lasting impression on me was the one in which Lyla visits Jason’s house and eventually vehemently storms out. Although initially it appeared that Lyla would continue to comply with Jason’s increasingly selfish requests and actions, it appears that her inherent feelings of sympathy and pity for Jason have subsided and she is now coming to the realization that Jason has become an individual immensely differentiated from the individual he was prior to his accident. This realization has allowed Lyla to reach several conclusions that will surely prove to be detrimental to their relationship, although the cessation of their relationship isn’t necessarily a negative thing.

  11. I don’t think the ending was either happy or sad. What I got form it was that the people of Odessa would cheer for these football player and make them superstars if they won, or condemn them if they lost. What I really got from the ending was that all of the football is really a never ending cycle. Each of the players is put on varsity, treated like a star and then once there senior year is over, they’re forgotten about. The coach just takes the names of the players no longer on the team off the roaster and remove the names from the lockers, and start to prepare for the next season and the new players who would be on the team next year. The fans also would be focused on the next season. "The season had ended, but another one had begun. People everywhere, young and old were already dreaming of heroes." (337)

I personally enjoyed the Panthers winning and going to State. If they are going to make them loose, they need to make it dramatic and have them loose in the championship. I also think the filmmakers had them win because the Panther players had spent so much time on building the field. They also may have done it because they needed more one more episode in the series. Whatever the reason was, I thought that having the panthers win was a god choice.

The moment that stuck with me was when Tyra was sexually assaulted. It was so surprising. One minute she’s leaving the restraint and the somewhat nice guy says she forgot her notebook, then suddenly he hits her and throws her in his truck. It really surprised and shocked me, specially when the Panthers where simultaneously going to state

  12. I think that what makes the ending sad is that it is the truth in a story that so desperately want to be made-up. We all want 1988’s players to be the exception. By starting with Brian Chavez’s story, I got a little bit of what I wanted in finding out that “… he successfully navigated a monumental transition from Odessa to Cambridge” (358). He brought his life in a new direction after the termination of his Permian career, which is all we can hope for. The disappointment comes when we find out that Jerrod McDougal tried to “erase his memories of playing football for Permian because he felt emotionally stunted by it. But he realized it was impossible” (359). Many of the other players, especially Boobie, struggled with moving on and finding direction after they had played their time at Permian. I found the truth to this ending to be its most winning aspect. The ending for me is what gives the book the highest degree of reality, because while I know nothing of the ways of high school football becoming life and even surpassing of having academics, seeing that “Boobie flunked out of Ranger College at the end of the 1989-1990 school year” (361) puts it right down on paper, plain and simple. It was also strangely disappointing to me to see that “… as a consequence of that shift (to more emphasis on academics), the glory of Permian football has dropped to an all-time low” (364). I guess all the time we’ve spent with Permian over the past few weeks has really fostered a connection between Mojo and me. More so than I could have ever imagined.

I like the decision to bring the Panthers through to the state championship game. While they could have made the season end right at the Mud Bowl makeshift football field, I think that the glorious last-second touchdown was the way it had to be. For Coach Taylor, he has to have something that is going to give him trouble with his career decision in order to spice up the season finale. Coach Taylor’s cow-pasture-turned-football-field was the weirdest part of the game and the episode to me. I think that this was an interesting addition of the producers, and while a bit far-fetched, I like the idea that its construction presents. The lengths to which the citizens of Dillon will go to have their home game. While not necessarily realistic, I like the absurdity of building a football field just to prove a point to the opposition. For television, that is a great addition, and to me, it does not matter that it’s fairly unrealistic. So the game’s ending also seems sort of appropriate.

The entire storyline of Tyra’s sexual assault is what has stayed with me the most of anything we saw today. Her strength to fight back against her oppressor was admirable, and her subsequent interaction with Landry is incredibly deep, especially considering the way we’ve seen Landry acting around Tyra. What Landry did in speaking to Mrs. Taylor was courageous, and showed that even though she begged him not to tell, he is looking out for what is best for her, no matter whether it ends up being what she thinks is best for herself. I think that at the roast, Tyra is finally beginning to see inside Landry for who he really is, and not for the “geek” she sees on the outside.

  13. I found the ending of the book, as well as the film, neither triumphant nor dismal, but settled. I wouldn't be so quick to identify the book's conclusion as depressing or hopeless - their adult lives were no longer stained with the eminence that high school provided for them, and they had to grow up and realize that that glory could not and would not remain with them forever. Jerrod McDougal referred to this recognition when he said, "What hurts so bad about it, I was a part of it for a while. The thing is, it always goes on, it will never stop. Permian will have good teams when you and I are dead and gone." (345) Finally, the entirety of the 1988 team came to grips with their normality in everyday society, that beyond the team, they hold the responsibility of dictating their lives, not the adoration of their fans. Although some of them still have that lingering commitment to the game, such as Jerrod, when Permian won against Midland Lee, and he went to hug one of the Permian players: "For the briefest of moments, he was back where he wanted to be." (346), and Don Billingsley, who "like Jerrod McDougal, he couldn't help but feel like a has-been." (347), the majority of the players simply moved on and allowed themselves to discover new sources of happiness. If anything, I felt that all of them came to some sort of resolution with themselves. Some more than others, but all of them experienced that on some degree.

It was interesting that such a momentous event was put in just the first season. I would argue that the show might, just might be getting too much ahead of itself, but I don't find their victory unrealistic. The team is evidently tenacious and possesses a certain drive and focus that isn't easily paralleled amongst other high school sports teams, so I'm happy to see them gain something meaningful in the midst of everyone's troubles.

The combination of the Panthers' win and the attack on Lyla left me in a completely conflicting state of emotion. The juxtaposition of the two events was so immensely bizarre, I was literally unable to fully commit to one emotion out of the (prominent) two that I was facing: excitement over the team's win, or disgust towards what Tyra's attacker was doing to her.

  14. The end was temporarily sad, but it did not seem like an unhappy ending to me. The only people who found the situation really sad were senior football players who now have to figure out what to do with their life. "And suddenly, he wasn't a high school football player anymore, but a high school kid with absolutely no idea of what he was going to do with his life" (336). The fans of Permian are already looking forward to next season as soon as the last one ends. "People everywhere, young and old, were already dreaming of heroes" (337).

I think the ending was done very well. One part that particularly resonated with me was how the two teams played on the hand-made field, and not the super-stadium. The stripped down, muddy football game seemed very raw and mundane compared to the games in the 12,000 seat stadiums. To me, that's what football is all about. However, the part that is particularly interesting about the ending is the sexual assault involving Tyra. This plot point draws the attention of the audience from the football game DURING the football game, which has never been done before in the series.
